Tex McPhilip in Quest for the Papacy

Magick Poultry Productions

Made in AGI

"You are Tex McPhilip, originally from Chicago. Up until this point your life has been fairly uninteresting, so we won't go into it. In just a moment you will awaken from a blackout. Little do you know, this will be the beginning of a great adventure..."

Those are the opening words to Tex McPhilip in Quest for the Papacy. The scene right after this, having awoken from your blackout made me laugh for the entire day. This opening goes down as one of my personal favourites because it's just so damned odd and funny.

The story behind the game is that you Tex McPhilip, have been given orders by the Virgin Mary to become Pope. The only way to do this however, is to kill all the competition. One can see how this game might not be for everyone so if you are easily offended religiously or find killing dogs not funny, then go play something else.

Now, as for the rest of us, the gore level on this game is quite high. You will most likely kill everyone that you come across in this game. And you won't just kill them, you will then most likely do bad things to their corpse. Sound like fun? Well it is.

The art is nice and consistent. There are a few incidental animations thrown in to help animate the scene, so it doesn't look so flat. The only real problem I have with the art is that there isn't any hint as to what part of the screen will take me to another location. It isn't that much of a hassle, just check each side of the screen to make sure you aren't missing a location.

The puzzles are... odd. Like I said before they involve a lot of killing, but many times the answer to a certain puzzle isn't always obvious. So you may find yourself stumbling around for a little not sure of what to do. However, it wasn't really that bad, because I was able to finish the game easily enough.

This game is relatively short. There are a good number of puzzles thrown in there and the story is pretty bare bones, it seems that the creator was making it up as he went along, but this isn't a point against it. Just download both games and play them in succession and you've got a great weekend already!
